How to Control Your Emotions at Poker

Poker is one of the most challenging games you can play. The game is often described as being more about the players than the cards and to be successful at poker tables you need to be able to read people’s emotions. However, if you’re an emotional person your expressions and mannerisms can sometimes give you away and lead to you losing a lot of money. Controlling your emotions as much as you can is one way to prevent this from happening.

One thing you can do is remind yourself constantly of your odds of winning. For example, even if you are 95% likely to win a hand, there is still a 5% chance that you could lose. Keeping this in mind will help you come to terms with any losses you suffer more easily.

It is also important to make sure that you don’t hold grudges against any players that take money from you. If you lose a big hand, it can be tempting to ‘go after’ that player and take risks with cards that you wouldn’t normally take in order to get back at them. Unfortunately, more often than not this tactic is doomed to fail.

You also need to keep an eye on your ego. Many people play poker and there is always a chance that there are better players than you at your table. Make sure you realize this and don’t get upset with yourself if you lose a hand. Another great tip when you suffer a big loss is to simply walk away from the table and take a break. This will give you a moment to clear your head and sort out any unruly emotions you may be feeling – emotions which are sure to damage your chances of winning any future hands if they are left unchecked.
